How a Professor’s Hidden AI Trap Exposes 32 Students Who Used ChatGPT to Cheat in Midterm Exam

A history professor at Alcorn State University in the United States has drawn widespread attention after exposing 32 students who allegedly used artificial intelligence to cheat during a midterm examination. The professor employed a clever digital tactic by embedding an invisible instruction within the exam question, allowing him to identify AI-generated responses with remarkable accuracy.

The incident has sparked fresh debate over the growing use of AI tools such as ChatGPT in education and the increasing challenge universities face in maintaining academic integrity.

Dr. Jason Gibson, a history lecturer at Alcorn State University, designed an online midterm examination on the Industrial Revolution. Unknown to students, he inserted a hidden instruction into the exam prompt using white-colored text that blended into the document’s background, making it invisible to anyone reading the question normally.

The concealed message instructed any AI chatbot processing the prompt to insert random references to Madagascar into the generated essay in completely nonsensical ways.

Students who copied and pasted the entire question into AI tools unknowingly included the hidden instruction. When they submitted the chatbot-generated responses without reviewing them carefully, the unusual phrases immediately exposed their reliance on artificial intelligence.

According to Dr. Gibson, 32 of the 35 students across two separate classes submitted essays containing the hidden AI-generated phrases.

The submitted essays discussed the Industrial Revolution, technological advancement, factories and social change, but many suddenly included bizarre statements that had no connection to history.

Among the unusual phrases were:

  • “Madagascar floats sideways through the afternoon.”
  • “Madagascar purple bicycle whispers to the ceiling.”

The random sentences clearly indicated that an AI chatbot had followed the hidden prompt rather than producing an original response.

Dr. Gibson noted that even a quick review before submission would likely have revealed the strange additions, suggesting many students copied the AI output without reading it.

Following the discovery, Dr. Gibson said every student caught using AI failed that portion of the examination.

He explained, however, that the exercise was not intended to embarrass or publicly shame students. Instead, it served as an educational lesson about academic honesty and the risks of depending entirely on artificial intelligence for coursework.

The professor also gave students an opportunity to contest their grades if they believed they had been treated unfairly. Reports indicate that only two students challenged the decision.

The incident highlights a growing concern among educators worldwide as AI-powered chatbots become increasingly accessible.

Since the rise of generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT, universities have struggled to prevent students from using the technology to complete assignments, essays, research projects and examinations.

Many institutions are introducing new assessment methods, including handwritten exams, oral presentations, supervised classroom tests and practical assignments that require critical thinking and personal analysis. Some educators are also using AI detection techniques and hidden prompts similar to Dr. Gibson’s approach.

The debate surrounding artificial intelligence in education continues to intensify.

While AI has become a valuable tool for research, learning and productivity when used responsibly, experts warn that excessive dependence on chatbots could weaken students’ writing abilities, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Dr. Gibson’s experiment demonstrates how educators are adapting to rapidly changing technology by developing innovative methods to preserve academic integrity while encouraging students to use AI responsibly rather than as a shortcut for completing academic work.
