Federal Government Declares Monday, March 31 and Tuesday, April 1 as Public Holidays for Eid-el-Fitr Celebration

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as public holidays to celebrate the end of Ramadan with the Eid-el-Fitr festival.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji–Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the government.

In his statement, Minister Tunji-Ojo expressed his heartfelt congratulations to all Muslims across the country for successfully completing the fasting period of Ramadan, a month of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and devotion.

He acknowledged the commitment and sacrifice made by millions of Nigerian Muslims who observed the fast and engaged in acts of worship, prayer, and charity throughout the holy month.

The Minister urged all Muslims to reflect on the values instilled during Ramadan, including self-discipline, compassion, generosity, and peace, and to carry these virtues into their daily lives beyond the celebration.

He emphasized the importance of love, forgiveness, and solidarity in building a cohesive and harmonious society. “As we celebrate Eid, let us remember that it is a time to strengthen the bonds of unity and peace among ourselves, our families, and our communities, he said.

In addition to these spiritual reflections, Minister Tunji-Ojo called on all Nigerians, regardless of faith, to use the Eid period as a time for prayer and goodwill for the nation. He urged Nigerians to pray for the continued peace, stability, and prosperity of the country, particularly in light of the numerous challenges that the nation faces.

Let this be a time of collective prayer for the progress and growth of Nigeria, as well as a period for individuals to reflect on how they can contribute to the peace and development of our beloved country,” he stated.

The Minister also stressed the importance of celebrating the holiday in a responsible manner. He encouraged Nigerians to adhere to safety guidelines and public health protocols to ensure that the festivities do not lead to unnecessary risks or challenges.

It is important to celebrate responsibly, ensuring that we keep the safety and well-being of ourselves and others at the forefront of our minds,” he said.

In the true spirit of Ramadan and Eid, Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to extend kindness and charity to the less fortunate in society. He highlighted the importance of helping those in need, particularly during a time of celebration.

As we celebrate, let us not forget those who are less fortunate. I encourage you to engage in acts of charity, providing for the less privileged, and ensuring that the true spirit of Eid resonates in our actions,” he added.

The Minister concluded his message by extending heartfelt Eid Mubarak wishes to all Muslim faithful in Nigeria and around the world. He prayed that the blessings of the season bring happiness, success, and fulfillment to all, and that the values learned during Ramadan help to foster peace, love, and understanding within Nigerian society.

“On behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, I extend my warmest wishes for a joyous Eid celebration. May this Eid bring immense blessings to all and inspire a renewed commitment to peace, unity, and harmony in Nigeria,” he said.

As the country prepares for the holiday, citizens are encouraged to reflect on the deeper meaning of Eid-el-Fitr, a celebration that marks the end of Ramadan and a time of spiritual renewal.

It is a period of gratitude for the strength and patience shown throughout the month, and a moment to come together with loved ones in joyous celebration while reaffirming one’s commitment to compassion and community service.
