Benue Killings: Police Arrest Suspects Linked to Deadly Yelwata Attack

MAKURDI: Security agencies in Benue State have confirmed the arrest of suspects involved in the recent deadly attack in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area, which left multiple residents dead and thousands displaced.

The arrest was revealed during a press conference on Sunday by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi.

While the identities of those arrested were not disclosed, the development comes days after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed Nigeria’s security leadership to take immediate action against the perpetrators of the Yelwata massacre.

This arrest wouldn’t have been possible without the cooperation and support of Governor Hyacinth Alia, CP Emenari said.

According to the police chief, all tactical units deployed by Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, have arrived in Benue and are now stationed across various rural communities to reinforce security and prevent further violence.

In a proactive measure, CP Emenari also appealed to landlords, hotel managers, and business owners to properly vet tenants and guests to avoid harboring criminal elements.

The arrests follow a strong directive from President Tinubu during his visit to Benue last Wednesday. Addressing the security chiefs, Tinubu said: Police, I expect arrests to have been made. Those criminals must not be allowed to roam free.

Let’s get them. Christopher (Chief of Defence Staff), I commend your efforts. Oloyede and the Air Marshal, we appreciate you too, but we must do more. DG NIA, DG DSS, improve intelligence gathering and stop this from repeating.

The Yelwata killings, allegedly carried out by armed herders, occurred earlier this week, plunging the farming community into mourning and chaos.

This fresh attack has reignited national concern about security lapses in Benue State and the ongoing violence between herders and local residents.

Security forces are now racing to prevent retaliation and restore calm, even as investigations into the attack continue.
