LAGOS: The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with Huawei Technologies, has launched four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites aimed at monitoring speeding and improving traffic flow management.
During a press briefing on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, shared that these new installations would complement the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other Traffic Management Solutions in place.
The newly established checkpoints are specifically designed to monitor overspeeding. One is positioned at Alapere on Ogudu Road with a speed limit of 80km/h, while another is located at Nitel on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way with a speed limit of 60km/h. These sites are strategically placed to tackle speeding, one of the primary causes of road accidents.

Also, e-police sites have been set up at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road. These sites are designed to detect a variety of traffic violations, such as running red lights, lane discipline violations, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways, Osiyemi explained.
While urging motorists to comply with the traffic rules, Osiyemi outlined the fines: a penalty of N20,000 for running a red light and N50,000 for exceeding the speed limit.
Enforcement will begin immediately, with offenders receiving SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service detailing the violation and the fine to be paid.
“This system is not intended to be punitive but to promote responsible driving and reduce accidents,Osiyemi emphasized. The aim is straightforward: to save lives, protect property, and ensure an organized traffic system.”
The briefing was attended by Olatunbosun Alake, Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology; Olawale Musa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation; representatives from Huawei Technologies; and senior officials from the ministry.
