YouTube cracks down on VPN users seeking cheaper Premium subscriptions.

YouTube is adopting a cunning strategy in response to Premium customers who use virtual private networks, or VPNs, to access lower subscription prices abroad. Many users recently vented their outrage on Reddit, claiming that their Premium plans had been revoked because they had purchased the membership outside of their authorized area while using a VPN.

YouTube acknowledged that it may be able to tell when a subscriber is lying about the country in which they registered and may request that the user update their billing information.

“We now have techniques in place to find out the nation of our customers, so that we can present probably the most correct plans and presents obtainable,” a YouTube representative said. “We ask members to update their billing information to their current country of residence in cases where the consumer’s country of registration does not match the location from which they access YouTube.”

However, the company declined to comment on the cancellations. According to PCMag, a Google support agent indicated that YouTube was indeed terminating memberships for accounts with falsified registration details. Users who violate this policy receive both an email and an in-app notification regarding the cancellation. This reported action comes a year after YouTube increased its Premium prices in the US, from $12 to $14 per month.

YouTube is actively pursuing users who utilize VPNs to access Premium subscriptions at lower rates offered in other countries. Upon detection, users are instructed to update their billing information or face cancellation of their Premium subscription.
