UMUNEDE KINGDOM-DELTA STATE: Umunede Kingdom in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State was filled with vibrant colors, rhythmic drumming, and royal elegance today, Wednesday, as the community celebrated its most iconic cultural event, the Igue Festival.

Known as the most popular traditional festival in the northern part of Delta State, the Igue Festival drew crowds from across Nigeria and beyond, uniting sons and daughters of the land in celebration of heritage and thanksgiving.

The atmosphere was electrifying as traditional chiefs, elders, and dignitaries from across Ika nation and neighboring communities gathered at the royal palace of His Royal Majesty, Dr. Ezeagwu Ezenwali Agadagidi I(JP), the revered Obi of Umunede. Dressed in their full regalia, the chiefs arrived in majestic procession, accompanied by praise singers, palace guards, and cultural dancers.

Their presence added prestige and spiritual depth to the ceremony, as the group paid homage to the monarch and reaffirmed their loyalty to the crown.

The chiefs’ rich traditional attire, from flowing regalia and traditional to symbolic beads and painted a picture of unity, pride, and ancestral strength. Beautifully adorned with colourful and traditional motifs, the palace grounds became a stage for royalty and culture to shine.

The festival, which marks the end of the bush clearing season and a time of gratitude to the gods for a successful clearing, began with spiritual rites and cleansing rituals led by the palace priests. Libations were poured, and ancestral blessings invoked, signifying the community’s deep connection to its roots.

One of the most captivating moments of the day was the coming to the stage of the Obi of Umunede, resplendent in his royal white robe and beads. He was welcomed with thunderous cheers and rhythmic drumming as he took to his dancing steps at the center of the celebration.

In his address, the monarch expressed appreciation for the peace and unity enjoyed by the kingdom, urging the people to preserve their cultural identity in the face of modern challenges.

The Igue Festival is not just about celebration, he said. It is a reminder of our values, our history, and the spirit that binds us as one people.

Masquerades, age-grade performances, and traditional music filled the air as guests feasted on local delicacies and palm wine. The celebration also provided an opportunity for community development discussions, with notable indigenes pledging support for ongoing projects in the kingdom.

As the sun set over the historic town, the echoes of drums and jubilation could still be heard, a reminder that the Igue Festival remains a proud symbol of Umunede’s cultural strength and unity.
