Sunday Igboho Petition UK Prime Minister Over Yoruba Nation Creation

Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, a Yoruba Nation agitator, has submitted a petition to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, to consider the creation of a Yoruba nation out of the country,Nigeria.

Tha was made known in a post on X page of Olayomi Koiki, the spokesman for Sunday Igboho, on Sunday.

He stated that Igboho submitted the petition on behalf of the leader of the Yoruba Nation movement, Prof. Adebanji Akintoye.

He wrote, “At exactly 14:00 hrs Dr. Chief Sunday Igboho delivered a petition to the UK Prime Minister on behalf of Prof. Adebanji Akintoye, leader of the YORUBA NATION movement, and Olayomi Koiki, his spokesman @10DowningStreet

Those who accompanied Igboho were Diaspora Youth Leader, Prophet Ologunoluwa, Vice President of Ifeladun Apapo, Fatai Ogunribido, General Secretary of Yoruba World Media, Alhaja Adeyeye, and Member of Yoruba Nation Movement, Paul Odebiyi.

 Igboho’s petition highlights issues like insecurity, economic marginalization, and ineffective governance in Nigeria, especially in Yoruba-dominated areas. He points to incidents of violence, notably from Fulani herdsmen, which have led to loss of lives, property destruction, and a severe decline in regional stability.

Igboho and his supporters argue that Nigeria’s federal structure is imbalanced, stopipng the Yoruba people of progress and even development.

Through the petition, Igboho states the UK’s historical connection to Nigeria, asserting that Britain has a unique role in supporting a peaceful referendum to allow Yoruba people to decide their future.

He emphasizes the right to self-determination, citing international treaties like the UN Charter, arguing that the Yoruba have a legitimate right to choose their political and economic trajectory. An independent Yoruba Nation, he contends, would provide better security, governance, and opportunities for its people.

However, Igboho’s campaign has faced controversy, with the Nigerian government seeing his activism as a threat to national unity, leading to legal actions against him. Despite this, his movement gains support both within Nigeria and among the Yoruba in diaspora, who echo concerns about justice, security, and equality.

Igboho’s petition underscores the urgency for international intervention, emphasizing peaceful dialogue and diplomacy. By reaching out to the international community, particularly the UK. The petition state Igboho hopes to create a pathway for a fair referendum, allowing the Yoruba people to determine their future in a way that aligns with their cultural and political aspiration.

Akintoye and Sunday Igboho have been at the forefront of the actualization of a Yoruba nation. The immediate past government of president Mohammadu Buhari has in the past arrested Sunday Igboho over agitation for succession.
