Governor Gov Fintiri Criticizes Federal Government’s Economic Policies, Says Nigerians Are Suffering

YOLA:On Thursday, the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, launched a sharp critique of the Federal Government’s economic policies, claiming that these policies are inflicting severe hardship on Nigerians. His comments came during a meeting of the National Reconciliation Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), where governors from the North East and other prominent party stakeholders gathered in Bauchi. Among those present were the Governors of Bauchi and Taraba, as well as the acting PDP National Chairman, who were all part of the crucial discussions.

Governor Fintiri expressed deep frustration with the current state of the nation’s economy, using stark language to convey the mounting suffering of the Nigerian people. “Nigeria is bleeding, we are suffering, there is too much anger, and the economic policy is not working,” he declared. The governor’s remarks highlighted his belief that the government’s economic strategies are far removed from the realities facing everyday Nigerians.

He went on to emphasize that the prevailing economic conditions are detrimental to the populace, saying, “That is why we always call on the Federal Government to reconsider some of these economic policies that are only putting hardship on Nigerians.” His passionate plea called for a rethinking of policies that seem to worsen the situation rather than offer relief.

Fintiri did not stop at criticizing the economic policies; he also reflected on the broader concept of leadership, stressing the importance of integrity and responsibility for those in positions of power. According to him, holding office is not just a privilege but a sacred trust bestowed by God.

Leadership is a privilege given by God, and the country must be governed based on trust and responsibility, Fintiri stated, underscoring the need for ethical and accountable governance, especially in times of national difficulty.

He further urged the Federal Government to prioritize policies that would alleviate the suffering of Nigerians rather than compound it. Whatever will make us cry must not be part of your policy because the country belongs to us, he said. Fintiri’s comments also pointed to a larger issue he perceives with external influences on Nigeria’s governance. It does not belong to the World Bank, IMF, or the international community, he added, reinforcing the idea that Nigeria’s policies should be designed with the well-being of its citizens as the foremost concern, and not dictated by foreign interests.

In addition to his critique of the government, Fintiri also focused on internal party matters, particularly in terms of the PDP’s unity and strength. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the three PDP governors from the North-East would work together to fortify the party’s influence and organization in the region We must work together to strengthen our party and bring it to greater heights in the North East,  Fintiri said, signaling a united front from the region’s leadership.

The governor also spoke proudly of the PDP’s strong performance in the last presidential election, noting that the party emerged victorious across all states in the region. There is no state in the zone that PDP lost. Even the one we lost in Borno, up until now, we are still wondering how we lost that election because we know we did not lose that election in Borno, Fintiri remarked, hinting at lingering concerns about the election results. His comment underscored the party’s confidence in its support base in the North-East, even as they reflected on the challenges faced during the election.

During the meeting, the Chairman of the National Reconciliation Committee, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, also spoke candidly about the factors that contributed to the party’s loss in the last general election. Oyinlola acknowledged that internal disunity within the PDP played a key role in the outcome, but he expressed confidence that these issues could be addressed moving forward. We are here to interact with our leadership and membership of our great party so that we can discuss where we are falling short of what we were supposed to do, which led to the outcome we witnessed  Oyinlola stated, highlighting the committee’s commitment to resolving conflicts and rebuilding the party’s strength.

The meeting of the National Reconciliation Committee was viewed as a crucial step for the PDP in restoring cohesion and reinforcing its presence in the North East. The region, which has historically been a stronghold for the party, remains central to its overall strategy for future elections. Fintiri’s comments, combined with Oyinlola’s acknowledgement of the party’s shortcomings, indicated a concerted effort to heal rifts and unite the PDP ahead of the 2025 elections.

As the discussion continues, many observers are keenly watching how the PDP plans to navigate the ongoing economic difficulties in Nigeria while strengthening its internal unity. Fintiri’s strong remarks signal that the party is prepared to be a vocal and influential opposition force, particularly in advocating for policies that put the welfare of ordinary Nigerians first. The coming months will likely reveal how these internal efforts align with broader political developments in the country.
