Senate Approves President Tinubu’s State of Emergency Declaration for Rivers State

ABUJA: Like the House of Representatives, the Senate has given its approval for President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, exercising its constitutional powers under the amended 1999 Constitution.

This move follows growing concerns over the escalating political and security crises in the oil-rich South-South state, which have led to widespread instability and disruptions to governance.

The Senate’s approval grants President Tinubu the authority to implement emergency measures in Rivers State, providing him with the necessary powers to address the urgent situation.

However, this approval also includes a stipulation that the state of emergency will be reviewed periodically, with a formal review required no later than six months after the proclamation.

This ensures that the situation is continuously monitored and that any further necessary actions can be taken in a timely manner.

As stipulated by the Constitution, the National Assembly has established a joint committee consisting of members from both chambers to oversee the administration of affairs in Rivers State during the emergency period.

This committee will be tasked with ensuring that the actions taken during the state of emergency align with the legal framework and are focused on restoring peace, security, and effective governance to the region.

In addition to the oversight committee, the Senate has also resolved to set up a mediation committee. This committee will consist of distinguished and respected Nigerians who will be entrusted with the critical task of facilitating dialogue and working toward resolving the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.

The establishment of this mediation committee reflects the Senate’s commitment to finding a peaceful and lasting solution to the state’s political challenges, through dialogue and consensus-building.

The Senate’s actions come as part of broader efforts to stabilize Rivers State and restore law and order, ensuring that governance and democratic processes are not further undermined by the persistent tensions and violence that have plagued the region.
