Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State said police presence on LG election is not important, he expressed surprise at the conduct of the police, who are allegedly trying to break into the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission’s (RSIEC) building in an attempt to disrupt Saturday’s scheduled local government poll.
Governor Fubara said he was surprised by the action at a media briefing on Friday at the government house in Port Harcourt. He had earlier received information suggesting that the police planned to boycott the local government elections.
Fubara, accused the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, of bias, insisting that police presence at the scheduled Saturday election is not important and nothing will prevent the upcoming local government election from taking place in the state
He questioned why Rivers State is being singled out, especially in light of the excessive focus being paid to an electoral body that is governed by a state.
He emphasized that the Abuja court ruling had simply directed the police to refrain from providing protection and to not impede the polls or seal the premises of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
Since the decision from the Rivers State High Court was made first, in his view, it should be given preference.
