NJC Recommends Justice Kekere-Ekun As New CJN, 28 Judges

The National Judicial Council has recommended Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun to be the next Chief Justice of Nigeria.

At its 106th meeting, which was presided by Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, a proposal was made for Justice Kekere-Ekun to be nominated as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja. President Bola Tinubu received the recommendation.
Soji Oye, the NJC director of information, issued a statement containing this information.
“This is crucial as Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola will formally step down from his position as the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria next Thursday, August 22, 2024,” he stated.

Hunger protesters continue to criticize the nation’s deteriorating plight.
Judge Kekere-Ekun would become the second female Chief Justice of Nigeria if the president gives her approval. The first was Justice Mariam Mukhtar, who served in that position from July 2012 to November 2014.

During the meeting, the NJC also presented the proposals of 27 additional judges of state high courts, which will be approved by the president and the governors of the respective states.

“To their respective state governors and Mr. President, the Council also recommends twenty-seven (27) candidates for appointment as judges of state courts and one candidate for appointment as Kadi of the Sharia Court of the Federal Capital Territory, which is Abuja.”

With the NJC’s approval of the committee’s recommendations to the President and the governors of each state, all approved candidates are expected to take the oath of office.
