Lagos Speaker Mojisola Meranda May Step Down, Opening Door for Setonji or Rauf to Take Over

LAGOS: Princess Mojisola Meranda, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, may resign, creating the opportunity for either Mr. David Setonji or Mr. Wale Rauf to take on the role.

This shift comes after the intervention of key political figures, including former APC National Chairman and ex-Osun State Governor Chief Bisi Akande, former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, and Chief Pius Akinyelure, Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

Meranda made history as the first female Speaker of the House on January 13, following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa, who faced corruption, abuse of office, and authoritarianism allegations.

Obasa has since challenged his dismissal in court, arguing that proper procedure was not followed.Sources indicate that prominent political figures held a meeting with principal officers and House members over the weekend, with another gathering expected soon.

It is speculated that Meranda might return to her previous position as Deputy Speaker, with one of two lawmakers from Lagos West David Setonji (Badagry 2) or Wale Rauf (Amuwo Odofin 2)—likely to be the next Speaker.

David Setonji, who has served in the House since 2015, is currently the Chief Whip. Wale Rauf, a member since 2019, is also considered a potential candidate.

The proposed change is seen as part of an effort to ensure regional representation in the state leadership. With both Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Speaker Meranda hailing from Lagos Central, Lagos West is left without a major leadership figure.

Since Obasa also came from Lagos West, it is believed that the next Speaker should come from the district.

Despite these developments, on Monday, February 17, 36 out of 40 lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in Meranda, expressing their support for her continued leadership. However, the House adjourned indefinitely, leaving space for further negotiations.
