LAGOS: The leadership crisis in the Lagos State Assembly escalated on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was ousted as Speaker by over two-thirds of the 40-member House, following accusations of misconduct and various offenses.
Immediately following his removal, Obasa’s then-deputy, Meranda, was elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female to hold the position in the South-West state.
On January 25, 2025, Obasa strongly contested his removal, asserting that he remained the rightful Speaker until due process was followed.

He criticized the heavy military presence at the Assembly during the impeachment process and claimed that his ouster occurred while he was out of the country.
Despite this, 36 lawmakers loyal to Meranda maintained that the decision to remove Obasa was final and that Meranda was the legitimate Speaker.
Tensions reached a peak on February 17, 2025, when a confrontation broke out at the Assembly Complex between security forces and some legislative workers over the presence of the former in the chambers.
Following this, 36 lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in Meranda and adjourned the session indefinitely.
On February 27, 2025, Obasa returned to the Assembly Complex, accompanied by a group of heavily armed security personnel, marking his first appearance in the chambers since his removal on January 13.
Obasa insisted that he remained the Speaker, despite objections from his colleagues who had pledged allegiance to Meranda.
