LAGOS: The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released comprehensive guidelines for the registration of the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), alongside common challenges candidates may face during the process.
The guidelines were announced on Sunday via JAMB’s official X handle, with the board noting that the move is aimed at helping candidates prepare properly ahead of the commencement of registration.
JAMB advised candidates to verify that their personal details such as their National Identification Number (NIN), email address and A-Level results are accurate before attempting to generate a profile code.
Candidates are required to send their 11-digit NIN via SMS to either 55019 or 66019 (for example: NIN 00000011111 to 55019/66019). Once generated, the profile code cannot be altered, as candidates’ biodata is automatically retrieved from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
After obtaining the profile code, candidates are to visit the nearest JAMB office or any accredited Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre to complete their registration.
The board stressed that E-PINs must only be purchased through authorized channels, including banks, approved online platforms, or designated vendors at registration centers.
Candidates are also advised to confirm that the correct registration template is used and that all personal details are accurate before final submission, as errors may result in complications later.
JAMB urged candidates to resolve any discrepancies in their records with NIMC early and ensure such corrections reflect on the portal prior to registration.
These corrections may include name, date of birth, gender or state of origin.
The board also noted that phone numbers and email addresses serve as unique identifiers and cannot be changed or shared. They must therefore be active and accessible throughout the registration process.
Candidates experiencing biometric challenges were advised to report directly to the nearest JAMB office.
The board warned that no CBT center is permitted to forcefully register any candidate with unresolved biometric issues.
It also emphasised the use of dual screens during registration and proper capture of passport photographs and biometrics.
JAMB highlighted several issues commonly encountered during profile code generation. These include Error 550 or 66019, which indicates an incorrectly formatted request, and suggests candidates resend their NIN using the correct format.
The Number Already Registered message means the phone number has been linked to another profile, in which case candidates may need to retrieve the original SIM card or use a new number.
In cases where applicants are unable to verify their NIN, JAMB advised them to wait for a while and try again.
The board announced that the 2026 UTME form will be on sale from Friday, January 31, 2026, to Saturday, March 8, 2026
