Hike In Pump Price Will Worsen Workers’ Poverty, TUC President

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has kicked against the latest increase in the pump price of Petrol, warning that it would worsen poverty among workers. The union made its position known in a statement on Wednesday.

The TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo, who signed the statement urged the Federal Government to immediately rescind these decisions, promote policies that will strengthen the naira, and take decisive steps to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians,”

It claimed that the sudden rise, and it was “implemented without consultation with critical stakeholders,” showed a blatant disdain for the welfare of Nigerians, particularly the working class, who are particularly impacted by these decisions.

According to Osifo, “the sudden rise in fuel and electricity prices will only make these issues worse, leading to additional hardship and potential social unrest.”

We urge the government to reverse these actions right away, promote policies that will strengthen the naira, and take decisive action to lessen the suffering of Nigerians. The government needed to move swiftly to avert potential crises.

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria remains committed to defending the rights and interests of Nigerian workers and will continue to advocate for policies that promote social justice, fair wages, and a decent work environment.”

Lack of any significant social security measures shows a lack of understanding and empathy for the difficulties that regular Nigerians confront.

Why must the ordinary Nigerian suffer from the country’s exorbitant cost of living while the powerful enjoy greater privileges and wealth?

Osifo said, “The government has not focused on allocating resources or enacting policies that would strengthen the naira and improve the standard of living of our citizens.

Neither has it made any concerted efforts to reduce the cost of governance or personal effects. instead they are increasing electricity tariff and fuel prices at will.
