ABUJA: The Coalition for Parliamentary Democracy (CPD) has blamed the ongoing #endbadgovernance nation wide protests over economic hardships on the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, saying he must be held responsible if Nigeria failed.
The group through its leadership alleged that the statement credited to Senator Akpabio wherein he declared that Nigerians can be protesting while they that are in government are eating spiked the protests that had just started when he made the reckless comment.
The group’s National Coordinator, Dr Menike Johnson, said the reckless utterance of senate president Godswill Akpabio fuel the youths anger who then alleged that the federal government is insensitive to the plight of Nigeria Youths.
They blame the Government of President Bola Tinubu for uncaring, inconsiderate, and detached from NIgerians
The pressure group further narrated that Akpabio’s statement portrayed him as one with an agenda that is different from what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is preaching.
Nigerians are calling on the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to resign from office after his infamous comment that he and others in the government would be “eating” while the youths went to the street to protest.
“Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be here eating,” Mr Akpabio said on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, at an event organised by the Niger Delta Development Commission.
“Amnesty International strongly condemns the insensitive and reckless comments attributed to the President of the Senate Godswill Obot Akpabio regarding plans of some Nigerians to peacefully protest current economic hardship,” the rights group said in a statement posted on X.
The AI said “Taunting people seeking accountability is unacceptable: Millions of Nigerians are currently on the brink of starvation because of corruption and mismanagement, and mocking them is a stain on the exalted office of senate President, the no 3 Public office holder in Nigeria held by the former two term Governor of Oil rich state of Akwa Ibom, Mr Akpabio.
It’s Harmful and irresponsible rhetorics from government officials — at this difficult time — must end,” it added.
