Governor Oborevwori Unveils Plan to Create 50,000 Jobs Through Agricultural Economic Zones

 

ASABA: Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, announced a transformative initiative aimed at creating over 50,000 jobs and boosting  DELTA STATE economic growth through the establishment of Special Agricultural Economic Zones.

This groundbreaking programme, which targets food security, agro-processing, and infrastructure development, is poised to significantly impact the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Speaking at a meeting with officials from the African Development Bank (ADB), Federal Ministry of Agriculture, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), and the National Cereal Research Institute (NCRI).

Governor Oborevwori outlined how the Special Agricultural Processing Zones will not only strengthen Delta’s agricultural ecosystem but also elevate the state’s role in global agro-industrial value chains.

We are committed to making this programme a resounding success, the Governor said, as he expressed his gratitude to the delegation for selecting Delta State for the second phase of the project. He highlighted Delta’s rich arable land, ideal for crops like palm fruit, cassava, maize, and yams, as a solid foundation for the programme’s success.

The Governor also emphasized the importance of the Special Agricultural Processing Zone, stating that it would play a pivotal role in transforming the agricultural sector by attracting investments, creating jobs, and boosting export earnings.

His administration is determined to meet all necessary requirements to ensure the project’s realization, with a strong focus on collaboration with the African Development Bank.

Dr. Chuma Ezedinma, leader of the ADB delegation, praised Delta’s innovative Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) model, which integrates public-private partnerships to drive industrial and agricultural growth. He also emphasized the role of the state in leading the development of these economic zones.

Pastor Godwin Akpovie, CEO of the Delta State Free Trade Zone, added that initiatives like the Free Trade Zone Operations Centre in Kwale and the Osubi Agro Transformation Centre would create thousands of jobs across the state.

With a focus on strategic agricultural development and industrial growth, Governor Oborevwori’s vision promises to transform Delta into a hub for agro-processing and sustainable economic growth
