WARRI: Five people have been confirmed dead after a boat capsized on the Bennett Island River in the Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. The tragic incident occurred on Monday night, sending shockwaves through the local community. As of Tuesday, one person is still missing, and authorities are continuing search and rescue operations.
According to a statement from the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the boat accident took place along the popular river, which is known for its heavy water traffic. The boat, which was reportedly carrying multiple passengers, capsized under unclear circumstances.
SP Edafe confirmed that five individuals lost their lives in the accident, and six others sustained injuries. These injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment. The police spokesperson also stated that a total of 19 people were successfully rescued from the scene of the accident, but one person remains unaccounted for. The authorities have intensified search efforts to locate the missing individual.
Following the incident, the Delta State Police Command launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the capsizing and to ensure those responsible for operating the boat are held accountable. The state government, in collaboration with local agencies, has also expressed its commitment to supporting the victims’ families and providing aid to the injured.
