The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has formally declared Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as the new leader of the party in the state, following his high-profile defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC earlier this week.
In an official statement issued on Wednesday by the Delta APC Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, the party confirmed that Oborevwori’s defection was not just symbolic but transformative for the party’s leadership structure in the state. The APC emphasized that in line with its established tradition across the country, a sitting governor automatically assumes the position of the party leader upon joining.
“We wish to categorically state that with his entry into the APC, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assumes the position of the leader of the party in Delta State. This position is not subject to debate or contention,” Onojeghuo said.
The APC highlighted the endorsement of Oborevwori’s leadership role by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the official defection ceremony. According to the party, Shettima’s comments were not only supportive but also served as a definitive confirmation of the governor’s new status. The party described the Vice President’s words as “authoritative, binding, and final.

Addressing internal dynamics, the statement issued a stern warning to those within the party who might challenge the governor’s leadership. The APC made it clear that any attempts to undermine Oborevwori’s position would be met with disciplinary measures.
“Delta APC finds it strange, arrogant, and reprehensible for any individual to continue to arrogate or parade himself as the leader of the party in Delta State in clear opposition to the present reality,” the party said.
Anyone who seeks to undermine this position or sow seeds of discord within the party will face severe sanctions. We are focused on unity, discipline, and progress under the new leadership,” the statement added.
The APC called on all stakeholders, members, and supporters to close ranks and rally behind Governor Oborevwori, particularly given his development blueprint, the M.O.R.E. agenda, an acronym representing Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.
“Delta APC is solidly behind His Excellency as our leader, and we recognise no other individual in that role. We urge all members to unite for the common goal of delivering good governance and democratic dividends to the people of Delta State,” the party declared.
Governor Oborevwori’s defection and immediate elevation as party leader mark a significant political realignment in Delta State, traditionally a PDP stronghold. His move is expected to reshape the state’s political landscape ahead of future elections, as the APC seeks to consolidate its influence and expand its grassroots appeal under the governor’s leadership.
This development is being closely watched by political analysts and stakeholders across the country, given its implications for both party dynamics and governance in the South-South region.
