ASABA: The crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has escalated, with the Delta North and Central senatorial zones strongly opposing the decision to appoint Chief Paulinus Akpeki, a senatorial vice chairman, as the acting state chairman. This decision follows the absence of the substantive state chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie, who is on medical leave.
The State Working Committee (SWC) of the party bypassed the deputy state chairman, Barr Francis Obigbor, and appointed Akpeki in an act that the Delta North and Central chapters of the APC have condemned as audacious and politically motivated. According to the two senatorial districts, the SWC’s decision serves hidden agendas rather than adhering to democratic accountability.
In a statement released on Monday, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, a leader of the Delta North APC, described the decision as a clear threat to the party’s unity and stability. He stressed that Barr Obigbor, as the deputy state chairman, is the rightful individual to assume the role of acting chairman, in line with the APC constitution.

Nwaoboshi declared full support for Obigbor’s appointment and warned that the Delta Central Senatorial District should not override the Delta North district’s position, which was duly elected during the last congress.
Also, the chairmen of eight local government chapters in Delta Central also rejected Akpeki’s appointment. They argued that the move violates Article 14.2 of the APC Constitution, which stipulates that the deputy state chairman should step in as acting chairman in the event of a vacancy.
The chairmen emphasized the importance of adhering to the party’s constitution, asserting that any deviation would threaten the party’s stability and democratic principles. They have called for the immediate reversal of Akpeki’s appointment to ensure compliance with the APC constitution.
