OYO: Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi has declared the Alaafin title as the most prestigious and superior traditional title in Yorubaland.
Oba Akanbi made this statement on Tuesday while hosting the newly crowned Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Owoade, in Iwo. According to the Oluwo, the title of Alaafin is deeply rooted in Yoruba history and tradition, tracing back to Oranmiyan, a descendant of Oduduwa. I don’t know any other title in Yorubaland that is superior to the Alaafin.
The Alaafin remains the Alaafin because it is the title Oranmiyan adopted. I will also adopt that designation, Oba Akanbi said.
He added that he now wishes to be referred to as the “Alaafin of Iwo” and plans to formally notify the government of the change.
The Oluwo praised the humility and modern outlook of the newly installed Alaafin, expressing optimism that Oyo State will experience peace and development under his leadership.

He also emphasized the strong historical and cultural ties between Iwo and Oyo, noting that the bond will only grow stronger.
Oba Owoade was crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo in April 2025, succeeding the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. During the visit, he was accompanied by his wife, Abiwumi, and a delegation of chiefs.
Speaking in Yoruba, the Alaafin said he visited Iwo to express gratitude to the Oluwo for attending his coronation and for offering early congratulations upon his selection.
I came to see the Oluwo because he honored me by attending my coronation in April. He also called me to congratulate me when I was named Alaafin-elect.
It is only proper that I come and pay him a courtesy visit, he said.
Oba Owoade emphasized the long-standing cordial relationship between Oyo and Iwo, affirming his commitment to preserving that legacy.
He also urged traditional rulers in the Iwo area to continue supporting the Oluwo and to work together for the development and unity of their community.
