Yenagoa: Despite the recovery of the body of Miracle Ekene, a 200-level Chemical Engineering student from the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, who tragically drowned on Sunday at Ekoli Creek in Yenagoa after a N300 bet, the university administration has yet to make a statement.
PUNCH Metro learned that his body was found on Monday evening, nearly a day after he went missing while attempting to swim across the river.
In a heartfelt gesture, fellow students organized a candlelight procession on Monday evening to honor the late student.
When contacted by PUNCH Metro, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ms. Mercy Ekott, stated via text message that she was not authorized to comment on the matter. Her message read, “Sorry but I haven’t been authorised to speak on the matter. Thanks.”
When asked about the student’s identity the following day, Ms. Ekott claimed she did not know.
Meanwhile, Mr. Musa Mohammed, the Public Relations Officer for the Bayelsa State Police Command, confirmed the recovery of the body on Tuesday and stated that investigations into the incident were ongoing.
Mohammed explained, “The deceased went to the river to bathe with another individual. Unfortunately, while bathing, he jumped into the river, leading to the incident. Investigations are underway, and we urge students, particularly the youth, to exercise caution around river environments, regardless of their swimming abilities.”
Reports suggest that Ekene had allegedly made a bet with some people, claiming he could swim across the river. As he attempted to cross, he disappeared underwater and did not resurface.
A university source revealed that the 200-level student had wagered with his coursemates to swim across the river, with each contributing N300 to the bet. While swimming, he submerged and has not been seen since.
