Governors Can’t Guarantee APC’s Victory in 2027 — Aregbesola

ABUJA: The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has cautioned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) against assuming that the defection or support of governors will automatically guarantee victory in the 2027 general election.

Aregbesola made this known while speaking at the launch of a book written by the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC. He said recent electoral outcomes in Nigeria clearly show that the number of governors backing a political party does not necessarily translate to success at the polls.

ABUJA: There is this assertion going around which is worrisome, Aregbesola said. Some people believe that because about 30 governors are supporting a party, that party will win the election.

According to him, recent election results in the country do not support such claims. He noted that the outcome of the last general election contradicted the belief that governors alone determine electoral victory.

To support his argument, Aregbesola cited the 2023 general election, particularly results from the South-West and South-East zones.

He explained that despite the dominance of APC governors in the South-West, the party secured only about 55 per cent of the total votes in the region.

He stressed that voter behaviour, political awareness and prevailing social and economic realities play a bigger role in elections than the influence of state governors.

Aregbesola urged political parties to focus more on good governance, credible candidates and people-oriented policies rather than relying solely on political structures ahead of the 2027 polls.
